Associate Senior Lecturer in Usable Privacy and Security (Tenure Track)

Description
The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for an associate
senior lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the
field of computer security.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two
research subjects: Mathematics and Computer science. It has a research and
teaching staff of more than 60 persons. In Computer Science, research and
education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems,
computer security and privacy, and software engineering, and are conducted
in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from
both academia and industry.
Computer Science is currently in an expansion phase to further strengthen
its focus areas and consolidate and develop its international position in
research. It has recently been established as an excellent research group at
Karlstad University and funding for the expansion is available through the
University’s strategic efforts to strengthen research. The Swedish
KK-Foundation has also granted additional funds to develop a research
profile within the Computer Science focus areas in close collaboration with
industry.
Duties
The position is connected to the PriSec (Privacy and Security) research
group within Computer Science. The main duty of the position is research
within the field of Human Computer Interaction related to usable security
and privacy enhancing technologies. In particular, the selected person
should contribute as a usability researcher and work package leader to
related research projects including EU H2020 projects.
The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the research
group by carrying out high-quality research, strengthening its international
network and expanding its external funding through applications for grants
at the national and international level. The duties also include research
administration, teaching in computer security and related subjects, course
administration and development, course coordination, and supervision of
thesis work at graduate and undergraduate levels.
The successful candidate is expected to teach and supervise partly in
Swedish within a couple of years. Karlstad University will supply adequate
training to make this possible. The position also includes interaction with
other parts of the university as well as with the community and it is
therefore important that the candidate has the ability to collaborate with
other groups.
Requirements
To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in
Computer Science with a specialization in Usable Privacy & Security or have
corresponding qualifications. The candidate must have completed the degree
no more than seven years before the last date for applications, unless
special grounds exist.
Knowledge or experience in the areas of Human Computer Interaction (HCI)
related to usable security & privacy is desirable. In particular, we welcome
experiences in the design and implementation of usable user interfaces and
in conducting user studies and the statistical analysis on data, as well as
a basic understanding of psychological usability aspects. Knowledge and
experiences within the areas of information security, and privacy-enhancing
technologies is a plus.
The ability to teach computer security at basic and advanced level and
software development at basic level is a further requirement. Good oral and
written communication skills in English are required.
Assessment grounds
In the assessment procedure emphasis will be placed, first, on research
skills and, secondly, on teaching skills. Special attention will be given to
the quality of research, and to past experience with externally funded
research projects involving industrial collaboration. Karlstad University
values personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and establish
good relations with colleagues and students as well as the ability to work
independently and to take initiatives.
Additional information The position constitutes full-time employment limited
to four years with starting-date at the earliest convenience. The position
can after application, be transformed into a permanent position as senior
lecturer. Promotion to senior lecturer requires completed suitable
pedagogical training for teaching at university level or equivalent
qualifications. Documented pedagogical experience and skills, well
documented research skills of relevance for the subject area of the
position, and demonstration of good collaborative abilities is further
required.
